About me

Hi – I’m Susie… welcome!

As you’ve visited my ‘About’ page, you’re probably expecting some background details about me… so here goes:

I live by the sea in the Australian state of Tasmania, a stunning temperate island situated right on the edge of the Great Southern Ocean.

In 2012, I graduated from university as a mature-age student, completing Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Fine Arts degrees, with a double major in Journalism, Media & Communications and Photography respectively. In 2013, I returned to university study, undertaking a postgraduate qualification in editing and publishing.

My professional life before study involved twenty-five years in the travel and tourism industries, working in sales and marketing roles. I have also worked as a freelance feature writer, producing opinion pieces, profiles and travel articles for newspapers and magazines.  Today I operate a small publishing consultancy.

As you already realise, I love photography. Picking up a camera saw me discover a creative side I didn’t really know I possessed. It was a revelation. And before long I was hooked!

I joined an online photography site and started posting images regularly. I spent hours viewing other people’s photographs, reading the critiques, studying the compositions, considering what I might photograph next. And over time my photography started to improve and I took more pleasure from the work (some of which you can view by clicking on the My projects links located at the bottom of this page).

For those of a technical bent, my current photography kit consists of:

camera bodies: Canon EOS 5D | Canon EOS 300D | Diana F+ | Canon EOS 3
lenses: Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS | Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM | Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM | Canon EF 17-40mm f/4L USM | Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM | Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM

And then there are books! I love books – books are precious things. I collect photography books (naturally!), and enjoy immersing myself in good fiction. I like to cook too, and I read cookbooks as if they were novels.

I’m also partial to deep, candlelit, fragrantly steamy baths; feather down pillows; playing good music loud; wearing fragrance; sipping from a tall glass with lots of clinking ice; and easing the cork from a favourite bottle of wine. I love sunshine, nature and hot tea.

I dislike insincerity and so am drawn to people who say what they mean and mean what they say. I enjoy people-watching, and am really interested in how life experience shapes the individual. I love to laugh and have a serious side when required. *blinks earnestly to illustrate*

I also really enjoy live theatre, documentaries, art exhibitions, reading the weekend papers, and indulgently long lunches with good friends. I absolutely love to travel, with oodles of wonderful destinations still on my ever-growing wish list. I love the mercurial nature of water, and ducking under the sea to skim along its sandy floor.

I adore animals, am vegetarian, and enjoy the enthusiastic company of a furry dish-licker, my much-loved Hungarian Vizsla ‘Lottie’.

I love clever design too – in typography and illustration and architecture and interiors, for instance… if you’d like to see the kind of design that appeals to me, you can check out my Pinterest board here.

So, now you know me a little better, why don’t you share with me some wide-ranging musings on the art of photography. You’re warmly encouraged to post your responses, ideas, feedback, and views, so please do put fingertips to keyboard and tell me what’s on your mind!

Thank you for dropping by… and now, it’s over to you!

    • Thanks so much, Elisa – it’s good of you to visit and especially good of you to follow my blog! It’s much appreciated. And, in *my* book at least, if you make photographs, you’re a photographer. 🙂

    • Why thank you, Jai! For someone new to blogging, such a nomination is quite unexpected and a delightful surprise. And congratulations to you on your Kreativ Blogger Award…a celebratory Friday night glass of fizz is in order all round methinks!

  4. Hallo Susie, Nice to meet you! Two things, since you prefer directness: 1) Good music should never be played loud; all that does is burst your eardrums, and 2) you were in sales and marketing and you never knew you had a ‘creative’ side…wow! Were you effective? Of course, my take on things is just mine and should only be viewed from the perspective of your experience, knowledge, and whatever! Will plumb the depths of your photo-projects, just out of curiosity. Best to you, and cheers from Melbourne!

    • Thanks so much for your considered impressions.

I should’ve been more specific: when I referred to ‘creative side’, I meant in a specifically *artistic* sense. For instance, I regret I have no talent for drawing at all, and I really admire those who do – I imagine it must be incredibly rewarding to be able to draw well. But I think it’s fair to say that most writers and photographers have a fundamentally creative disposition.

And yes, I was effective in my work. 🙂

Thank you once again for your interest in my blog, and for following too… I’m pleased you’ve found it engaging! Oh, and by the way, you live in a fabulous city – I really love all that Melbourne has to offer and make sure I visit there a few times each year…
      Susie
